Filing ITR with both salary and business income
Which form, how to combine incomes, and the regime choice that follows you once business income is involved.
May 30, 2026
Earning a salary and running a side business or profession is common — freelancing, a shop, consulting. The filing is manageable once you know which form to use and how the two incomes come together.
The right form matters
Once you have business or professional income, the simplest salary-only form no longer applies. You typically move to a form that reports business/professional income alongside salary, house property and other income.
Combine incomes correctly
Report salary from Form 16, then business income after allowable expenses (or under the presumptive scheme if eligible). Add interest, capital gains and rental income under their own heads before arriving at total income.
Regime choice is stricter
The old-vs-new regime switch is more flexible for salary-only taxpayers than for those with business income, where the choice can be locked for future years. Decide deliberately, not casually.
Estimate before you file
Run your combined income through the income-tax calculator to compare regimes, then confirm the numbers against your documents. Keep Form 16, bank statements, expense records and investment proofs together before filing.
